Ebook About
A powerful notebook laced with raw Holocaust memoriesShe lived through horror and survived to tell the stories of those less fortunate...Poland, 1943. Tragically orphaned Janina Hescheles recited poetry every night against the backdrop of Janowski camp’s burning bodies. Her haunting words catching the attention of the underground movement, she was smuggled to freedom just before the destruction of the site and the mass murder of its forced-labor Jewish captives. Concealed in Cracow and given writing tools to capture the brutal images in her head, the twelve-year-old began to faithfully record events and names of the dead.Hescheles’ report opens in June of 1941 with the ruthless Nazi occupation of her beloved city, Lvov. Through vivid recollections, she meticulously details the enforced imprisonment of her friends, family, and neighbors in the Ghetto. Her unique account recalls a child’s painful longing for the mother and father she lost to the sadistic Third Reich. In this courageous story of innocence taken so young, Hescheles reveals the stark daily realities of the horrific Jewish genocide. She was not afraid to be shot, but to be buried alive - the fate reserved for children. Written with descriptive immediacy during history’s ghastliest episode, this extraordinary notebook is an inspiring example of a Holocaust survivor bearing witness to the memories of a lost people. Complete with a recent forward, Hescheles exemplifies how life and hope can continue beyond unimaginable tragedy. My Lvov: Holocaust Memoir of a twelve-year-old Girl is a fascinating memoir that brings an appalling event to life. Book My Lvov: Holocaust Memoir of a twelve-year-old Girl (Holocaust Survivor Memoirs World War II Book 5) Review :

Twelve years old, Janina found herself to be an orphan in 1943, and an inmate of the terrible Janowski camp in Lvov. Together with other Jews, she lived through fear and oppression.A love for poetry was her unlikely way out of the camp and into a life of hiding in Cracow. Michal Borwicz, another camp inmate, took the young poet out of Janowski when he was rescued by an underground group. While in hiding, Janina wrote in a diary about her life in the beginning of the war, and until her escape. When reading My Lvov, it's the fact that Janina was so young, that really makes my heart break for her. At first, she could try and hide with old friends. However, as the cruelty of the Nazi regime tightened its grip around the Lvov inhabitants, even those she trusted most would chase her away when she needed refuge. Her rescue was unlikely and a great victory over such bad odds.Diaries written during WWII are important documents, describing the atmosphere and the events as they unfolded. The language in this book, apart from the introduction, is that of a child, but still Janina's My Lvov is on line with other writings from this period, like Viktor Klemperer in Dresden or Walter Leopold in Germany/Austria, or Rena Spiegel, who was also very young. The story is told in the past tense, but is written while Janina's danger was still surrounding her. This makes it a very important document, even today.
In 1943, still in hiding from the Nazis, a short time after she was rescued, Janina Hescheles, a 12-year old girl, wrote this clear and detailed diary describing what had happened starting with the Nazi occupation, the horrors of the pogroms, aktions, the Jewish ghetto, the loss of her parents and the concentration camp. I read the diary in a single breath. Janina describes the events with detail and clarity possible only close to the events and with the simplicity of a 12-year old. Starting from the Nazi occupation of Lvov in 1941 till her escape from the concentration camp in 1943. She describes the daily life and what happened to her and to her family and friends – the extreme experiences, the horror, the misery and disintegration of life, but also the hope, strength and determination that enabled her survival. Reading the diary arouses strong emotions of sadness, empathy and a desire to help the young girl. A unique strong historical document!
